Compact Frame sizing

I have never had a compact frame. Sizing appears confusing. I have always had a 23" frame and it has been fine. Can anyone say what size would suiit best in a Planet x or Ribble gran Fondo? I know some companies do actual measuring and others do virtual sizes, which are equivalent to traditional geometry? Of these 2 which would you buy anyway?
