Hi can someone help
Changed from SPD to Flats to work on my technique (fed up with falling off) and want shoes decent shoes (not mega expensive) to buy.
I know its best to but stiff soled but too many to choose from.
Any recommendations would be appreciated.
Thanks

How much do you want to spend? Both the 5-10s and Shimano AM40s are very good, but some decent skate shoes (Vans etc) can be great value.0

The Impacts do anyway.
Freeriders and the Ba5ic don't so well, especially the Ba5ic0 -
+1 for skate shoes, i ride with DCs cause they are super comfey, and you can wear them when your off the bike too, ill prob get thru a pair in about a year but i wear them every day as my shoes too0

Nah, Vans last forever.
When they start to look really tatty, keep those ones for bike duty and get new ones for day to day wearing.

Thanks for the replies
Shocked by the cost of the impacts.
Would you recommend the VANS use say round Dalby red/black route and the 7stanes routes cos of there next month?
Anybody know anything about shimanno mp660 -
I got a set of Marzocchi Bombers, they have the five ten sole on them so are really well and they have been great in all sorts of weather.0

vans look good. anyone know a decent type of xc/ dh.0

The AM40 backlash is gathering speed They've got better options (you can adjust the stiffness of the soles), they're better put together, they're designed with wet weather in mind and they have very nearly as much grip- and still miles more than you need. It's a total win really. It's a no score draw on looks though, they both make you look like a mong.
Vans are very good too though, I still ride a lot in mine and don't really find them lacking at all, and they last forever. I always say the same thing, my old TNTs were worn out from everyday use before I ever wore them on a bike, then they got a lot more use on the bike than my 5 10s did before they started to fall apart, and even now they're still going strong. Only real downer is a lack of toe protection, and often they have very flexible soles, which of course isn't all bad but can be a disadvantage.
(everyone always says to get the waffle sole ones, but the old dot sole is even better... I don't think they make any shoes with that any more but you can still sometimes find them in TK Maxx or the Vans clearance outlets)Uncompromising extremist0 -

Then you queue up for the Gondola for another run.
Chatel springs to mind
XC? a bit too boring to be honest, although I do love the feeling of reaching the top of a monster climb, like the top of Innerleithen, and realising as you look at the view down below that you got there under your own power.
Marin trail In Betws is a great XC route.0 -

right, for a simple link, first of all you need to put
then, you put the complete web address
then you need to put
I've had to seperate it there so it doesn't confuse the forum into thinking I'd typed a link
So, your link looks likehttp://www.boardwise.com/p-3030-vans-shrapnel-skate-shoe-hounds-black-high-rise.aspx
Does that make sense?0 -

I dont understand why people say they dont like the look of them, compared to the random sh*t I see on some peoples feet in the street they look rather tame.
I like the looks of them anyway, I may even go clubbing in them!
(Actually I propably wont go clubbing in them....)0 -
I bought some Vision skate shoes (similar to Etnies for £10
From Sports Direct.
Seriously, they work, are leather and will last forever....0 -
Tried the Impacts but they were too bulky for me and made my feet too hot.
Then I found the Five Ten Marvel - CRC have them on sale at the mo.

Same S1 rubber sole but the upper is like a running shoe. Very happy with them. Comfortable and stick like hell. Okay to wear around town. Good for climbing trees too . . .My abundant supply of MTFU is reserved for use in dry, sunny conditions.0 -

Curiously, for reasons I won't go into, I ended up riding my bike in my new walking boots yesterday, and they stuck to the pedals like chewing gum to hair!
Must remember that for snowy winter rides.0 -
I've quite often ridden in the knackered old trail boots I wear for trailbuilding and working on the motorbike and that, they shouldn't work but they do. TBH the only shoes I've tried to ride a bike in and failed is my vibram soled trainers, the sole's all the wrong shape and doesn't have enough contact, but with good pedals you can ride in pretty much anything I reckon.Uncompromising extremist0

I used to ride in some old Nike running shoe with the DMX sole (I think it was that although that is to do with sound) and they stuck like glue, not far off five tens.
That was becaus ethe sole was really soft so malformed around the pins effectively attaching the shoe to the pedal0 -
DMX is lighting, not sound.0

yeehaamcgee wrote:DMX is lighting, not sound.
DMX cableing can used for either I believe. But anyway, it doesn't sound like a shoe sole.
I'm glad my stage manager doesn't bike otherwise he'd kill me if he found out I got something simple like DMX mixed up0 -
I'm not a lighting guy, but I think you might be right. I believe DMX controlled lighting use standard XLR cables, like we use for audio.0

Yes . . . well at least CRC seem to class them as running shoes - but actually they are more like general-purpose cross-trainers. They're okay to walk in but TBH I don't think I'd enjoy running very far in them. Although they are not reinforced & heavy like the Impact or Sam Hill, that's why I like them. The cooler mesh uppers which dry out quickly seem to be a good compromise, but that might not appeal to everyone. The main thing is they have S1 soles - the design / ruggedness of the uppers is more a matter of personal preference.
One thing however - the tread pattern is typically 'running shoe', not the regular pattern of repeated 'dots' found on the Impact - although it doesn't seem to make much differences to the grip.
Oddly enough, they aren't on Five Tens own website, so they're probably either very new, or more likely so old that they have been discontinued. Maybe that's why the are going at such a discount! My abundant supply of MTFU is reserved for use in dry, sunny conditions.0
