This is a story about four Belgian students who were cycling back from a party when they were in collision with a car driven by a 23 year old man, who admits being intoxicated. Three of the Girls were killed, and one escaped with minor injuries. The sentence handed down to the driver was 6 Months jail suspended for 2 years. An absolute effin joke. Families of the deceased have chosen to appeal as they find the sentence much to lenient. What price a life.

That's really piss fucking poor. How the fuck can they justify sentences like that?

out of curiosity, what sort of sentence would a drunken driver causing such death and destruction in thiis country expect?

More appropriate but still not enough...
Here's one I dealt with where the girl got dragged for a mile under a car. I was first on the scene. It was horrific! I've been to many fatal accidents including ones involving kids but this sticks in my mind the most...

Fortunately, somehow, she survived. I'll never forget going to see her in hospital and seeing her sat up smiling a couple of months later...0 -
I would go on the (completely idiosyncratic) premise that the damage caused was the loss of 3 lives, and therefore the compensation should be for what those three people would have earned for their entire lives added up plus extra for emotional trauma.
6 months for what should be manslaughter!

FWIW here in the States if you kill someone while driving drunk you can plan on being "away" for up to 20 years. Very strong laws and sentencing.

The problem seems to be that the law sees the presence of a bike as a mitigating circumstance. If you plow into a crowd of pedestrians=bad. Plow into people who happen to be on bikes= maybe, possibly, it was their own fault, shouldnt they be more careful.

NapD, that's an appalling incident. I hope the girl's life hasn't been wrecked too much. Kudos for those in the various services for attending at incidents like that and worse.0 -

That's an horrific case NapD. I could only read the first few lines but then had to stop as the article started going into graphic detail. Just goes to show what the police and emergency services tackle with utmost professionalism and dedication on our behalf. It is amazing that the girl survived.
The 55 year old woman was banned from driving for 10 years which will be coming to an end in a couple of years  .
Re the OP on the drunk driver who killed 3 girls and only received a 6 month sentence suspended for 2 years - it's a pathetic joke. I thought the Netherlands was supportive of cycling the most cycle friendly country in the world. Obviously not ........Life is like a roll of toilet paper; long and useful, but always ends at the wrong moment. Anon.

Awful story. Have cycled round Gent as a student so it sends a shiver down my spine. Have also been driven round Gent by several drunk Belgians - not my finest hour, I woudln't even get in the car now (although I did at least refuse to drive). Unless things have changed a lot in the past 10 years, though, I can say that there is far less of a stigma associated with drink driving over there.0

I don't read Belgium, Flemish or Dutch. Ademort just says Begian students not where the collision took place. Ademort is located in the Netherlands.Life is like a roll of toilet paper; long and useful, but always ends at the wrong moment. Anon.

And sadly its often framed with this kind of language - it's pretty clear that in many, perhaps most cases, vehicles collide with cyclists, not the other way around. (not as if there are many incentives for cyclists to ride head-on into articulated lorries.... )
Disgusting and woefully inadequate sentences as ever given to motorists.0
