To want to buy one of these and some of these and swap everything else over from my Boardman?

    Nope.

Not a big fan of the forks because I prefer through-axle than open dropout.

Yeah but then it starts getting really expensive, what with new wheels an' all.

Definately not wrong, 456s are ace, but do bear in mind that the Boardman parts are designed for XC, with weight first, while the 456 and the Float are both capable of much sterner stuff, so if you want to use the new stuff as much as you can you're possibly going to destroy the old stuff and be killed to bits when it happens.

When I built my Scandal I killed and disected my Carrera to do it. Ironically the Carrera's frame was probably the best bit

+potato on that, as I have a 20mm Maxle on my Pikes and it offers a really stiff front end.
I've also just bought a 456 and am still undecided on the choice of forks. Perhaps another set of Pikes?
The only parts I am taking from the (reacquired) Kona for the 456 are seatpost, saddle, stem, bars, and derailleurs and shifters which are Deore XT. The RaceFace cranks/chainrings wont fit my 456, so those will also have to be bought new. Again undecided on choice.

Pikes would still be stiff if they had a tentpeg for an axle  This depends a lot on the fork, some would still be squiggly with a maxle frinstance, whereas with my old revelations the difference in stiffness between QR and maxle was trivial, they were stiff with either.

i'd say nope mate, but I do agree with the guys on the front end stiffness, I can really tell the difference with the 15qr on the talas compared to the normal skewer on my floats, On the plus points, i do really like both my fox shocks

how about you do what i do, buy something, then get bored and want something else a month later, and not becase its bad, just because i like all the shiny

To be honest, most bits that you move will be plenty strong for the on one as i doubt you will go from a normal XC rider to huge jumper in a few days, you will progress and replace bits as you do :p. it will be a giggle to ride and looks pretty. So I say your only sane mate.

That's a big 'if'. I don't think anything's particularly fragile on the Boardman (Pro HT) and I've not exactly been gentle with it so far. I only weigh 10 stone and am fairly smooth. Biggest concern would be the wheels, but I've battered them so far and they've stayed perfectly true. They're the same ones as on the more Trail-y FS, as is most of the kit I think.

Good point, lol. But I've 'upped' my riding lately and started to feel like I could do with a bit more plough-through-and-chuck-about-ability.

I agree, I'd be buying it for the slacker angles more than the ability to leap off cliffs.

You're probably right, I bought some titanium chopsticks off Alpkit last night, let's see if that cures my need to buy something!

Possibly just one of those flash in the pan ideas that I'll have forgotten about in a few days!

I hate On One's. Too damn common for a "custom" ride. Every other hardtail at a trail centre is an on one.

I ride a Halfords bike, so I don't really care about the name written on the side

That's because they're a) pretty good and b) incredibly cheap. Now, I hate Orange P7s because they're also incredibly common, not especially good, and faaaaar too expensive. But On Ones I approve of ;)

Hmmm, or I could do it as a super cheap experiment by increasing my Rebas to 120mm, and getting a second hand 456 frame. If I don't like it, flog the frame for what I bought it for and go back to the Boardman......
