Hi
After my extensive "glowing" last week brought about by wearing a rucksack in the sun I am going to invest in panniers.
I have come to learn that not all racks fit all bikes. Suddenly I feel like the novice I am...
I have a boardman hybrid team and thus disc brakes. Have any of you recomendations for racks that will fit with disc brakes.
Nicky
PS thanks for all the advice you gave people last week about bags as it's saving me asking that as well!

Old Man Mountain are an American company that make a range of racks for bikes with disk brakes - Carradice sell them online - designed for MTB trekking so good build quality0

I've got my eye on a Tubus Disco rack, but er, they're fairly pricey, and probably not worth the money.
Does your bike have rack mounts on it?
There's a couple which space out from the frame a bit to allow clearance for discs.0 -
It has eyelets on the frame- does that mean yes?0

I think Roastie found some racks that would fit his custom frame (with discs)...

Tourtec do a disc rack, no idea how good it is.
Whether you need one depends how sticky-outy your disk brake callipers are. If you can fit a normal rack on, you should.0 -
Near a decathlon?
This one fits my carrera gryphon - similar to the boardman in being a disc braked flat bar roadie.

Are you sure your bike will be a problem? I have one of the Topeak tubular models on my Mixer. Didn't need a special model, although they do have some specifically for disc break wheels: http://www.topeak.com/products/Racks/Su ... rRack_disc0

Bikes with the rear disc calliper mounted between the stays generally aren't going to need special racks.
If the disc calliper is mounted on the outside of the seat stay, most racks will foul against it (if the rack is mounted in the normal position).0 -
In which case, the item I linked to will be appropriate (which was the point )0

That's exactly the pannier rack I've got on my disc-braked Specialized Rockhopper itsbruce and it's top banana. I use it with http://www.topeak.com/products/Bags/MTXTrunkBagDX which might be too small a pack for some people, but Topeak do a range of panniers so you should find one to suit.0

I've fitted a standard rack onto my bike. I put a slight bend in the bottom of the legs (which I did in a vice) and put a spacer between the bottom of the leg and the stay to make sure it cleared the mechanism and top of the disc (which it probably did anyway) but other than that there was no other adjustment.

You could go to Halfords where the bike came from and ask them. My mate has one of their disc mount compatible racks on his MTB. Find it here:

I have just fitted a Madison Ridge, identical to the Raleigh Avenir but 2/3 the price, it cost me just over £20 delivererd, fits perfectly, solid and light (540 grams with the fixings I used) - sorted!
Before that I was running a steel one I had bent the legs (by hand, splayed them and then bent the bottoms back in square and used longer bolts with a lock nut at each end) to clear the calliper as beverick describes but wouldn't do that with tubular ally!
As has been stated if you have the calliper between the stays (as most Tandems and the GT 'tourer') then a normal rack is fine.

I have the Topeak Disc rack on my Kona (only just fitted) and it fits nicely and holds a pair of Ortlieb Back Rollers without any issues. Its also lighter than it looks. £30 from Evans I think.

Thanks for your thoughts. A passing comment from a collegue means I hadn't actually checked if a normal rack would work!
I think me and the bike will go for a journey to the bike shop this weekend...0 -
Go for the Madison ridge, for just over £20 delivered its as good as the topeak or Blackburns I looked at that cost 50% more, its disc specific and light as well as sturdy, main leg is heightadjustable so you can get it looking right, and the top includes a panel to act as a mini mud gaurd as well.
Got mine from Allterrain http://www.allterraincycles.co.uk/index ... &x=67&y=12

Sorry to resurect this thread. I have a Tortec Apex pannier rack which, I was advised, I could secure to my bike (with rear discs) using P clips. I was after a rack with sides for my pannier 'briefcase' to secure to and tried a post clamp variety but the rack pointed at a very strange angle. Having bought the rack and P-clips, but I'm finding that the P-clip is rotating under the weight of the rack/bag. Does anyone know of an alternative was of securing the rack or do I need to look for another rack0
