Commuter Upgrade

Hey All,
Well after 8,000+ miles, my Dawes hybrid is starting to show its age, so I have decided to treat myself to an upgrade.
My daily commute is a 7 mile round trip, about half trail, half surburban back streets with a dash of city centre taxi/bus dodging.
Apart from short weekend family rides I don't really use my bike for anything else although I am planning some longer distance rides in the summer.
Can anyone recommend a replacement up to around the £800 mark?
I've been looking at the norco vfr2 - I don't think my route or riding style would be suited to a full road bike, but I like the idea of getting something that gives me a bit more performance than a traditional hybrid (although I will probably end up sticking full mudguards and a rack on whatever I get).
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated
