Freehub broken after less than 2,500 miles...

Just after a bit of advice, really.

Bought my Bianchi at the end of January 2010. Haven't particularly thrashed it about, and it's not been left in the rain or the elements (it stays indoors!), but the freehub at the back has given up the ghost after just shy of 2,500 miles.

It was making a hell of a racket on the descents up in the Highlands (clang, clang, clang-ing) and it got to the Orkneys before a big clunk* happened and I started 'free-pedalling' to no effect...the wheels were going nowhere! It works intermittently now, although there's some horrible noises as I freewheel!

Just wondering if this something that I could reasonably expect to be replaced under warranty, or is it likely I'm going to have to pay to get repaired? Don't suppose anyone knows how much that's likely to be if so?

* - I do apologise for the technical language...one day I'll know what to say, honest!

Oh - I thought you meant the Freehub.

This isn't the post I thought it would be.

I had a Spesh Allez freehub go on a 2009 within the warranty, they didn't have a spare in the country so they replaced both wheels, I had a choice and could have upgraded. So I think you should be covered.

Can you let me know the make of the wheels? Are they the Shimano "Sora" equivalent ones - I think Shimano WH-R500? If so exactly the same thing happened to me at about the same distance. I was very cross, but didn't get mine replaced under warranty but I'd never by those wheels again.....

Yep parts are covered by a 1 year warranty on most bikes, just don't mention the 2500 miles bit, say it was 1000 or so miles - reason? They may say it was normal wear and tear...

    Teeth, lie through them!

Yep, they're those ones. Shimano WH-R500. Will replace the wheels in time (seems to be the next thing up on the upgrade 'to do list' for most people), but wasn't planning on doing it just yet!

Have already replaced the crankset and chainrings on the tour after mechanical problems there - on the plus side, it's now fully 105-equipped instead of having FSA bits...every cloud and all that!

Yeah! - you are going through all the same upgrades I did. I changed the chain rings too as the small one wore down so the chain didn't engage properly. Also I changed the brakes to Ultegra as the brakes the bike came with were shoot too.

So in conclusion, I had the same wheels and the same problem (also had the same chain ring issues) and just go them replaced. I assume Bianchi saved a bit of money on these two components.....do you think that's the reason? I just felt they were poor wheels and I battered them pretty quickly; same with the chain rings.
