Allan knows a great deal about the area. He's got some routes on his website, and some cracking good photos.

The Stelvio is on the cards for me and my mates next year, as well as the Gavia, Umbrail and the Mortirolo.

On the Giro this year, they finished a stage in Bormio, where they came over from the Livigno area, so that would be a good ride out to Livigno and back.

    Have a good one !

  • Thanks for the reply.
I had look at one of your earlier thread replies and had a look at Allan's web page.
    Great pictures !
They mentioned about a road up to Lake Cancano which we'll have a look at.
Do you know what month they went in ?

We actually saw the road upto the Lake you speak off at the back of Valvidentro, not sure if its fully paved but it looked steep as we saw a car going up!
  • Thanks for that RICHYBOYcp.

That's a crackin' picture of the road from Prato upto Stelvio.

We weren't planning on going up the Mortirolo,as we thought that Stelvio and the Gavia would be enough.
Would you say it is a must ?
Or which would you say were definites ?

We are only there for 3 full days and 4 nights.

Gavia from Ponte di Legno is the most beautiful experience Ive ever had on a bike and thats a big statement as Ive been lucky enough to experience a hell of a lot so far.

The Mortirolo is the toughest, and a very rewarding challenge, if you can then follow Day 2 of our Holiday and do the Mortirolo followed by he Gavia...simply cannot word my thoughts on that day!

Personally If I were you I'd try and do both sides of the Stelvio aswell..the Bormio side is well underrated and I think it has more character than the Prato side.

But the Gavia was the one climb that the whole 6 of us agreed was the finest.

My true thoughts are in the write up....

Its a dream place...we had a once in a lifetime experience.
  • Cheers,that's a great help.

Starting to really look forward to it,especially after those recommendations !!

I'm green with envy - I'd go back to Bormio tomorrow!

Just one thing I'd add - our rest day on day 3 - my Italian mate had a ride he fancied but we decided to take it easy but it would make a cracking ride.
Basically, from Bormio over the Passo Foscagno, Passo d'Eira (only a small climb from that side) then a huge descent to Livigno, along a fantastic road by the Lago di Gallo, and then the bit I was dubious about, a 4km tunnel (single carriageway with lights at each end) into Switzerland. Actually it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Around half way there's a 'refuge' area where you can sit and wait for the next batch of cars to come through and then finish off the last 2km's. Its all gently downhill too, so definitely the way to do it. Once out the other end, it's up the Passo Fuorn / Offenpass and then another huge descent down to Santa Maria where ts a sharp right and up the lovely Passo Umbrail which joins the Stelvio road about a mile from the summit. Downhill then all the way back to Bormio.

As for the Bormio-Mortirolo-Gavia loop - go for it - you know you want to ;-) It's bloody magic!

Let us know how you get on.
    Cheers... Allan.

    That's sounds excellent Allan !
I think we've got a few decisions to make,as we've only got 3 possibly 3 and a half days of riding,so we'll need to look at it all carefully.

Will let you know how we get on !
