Do I need additional insurance to ride a European sportive?

I'm signed up for the Maratona next month and would like to know if I need to get anything more than standard holiday insurance for it. If anyone has done a European sportive could share their experience that would be great. Thanks.

Normal Holiday Insurance is unlikely to cover you for cycle racing - and continental sportives are races. Some insurance will allow you to top up for hazadous activities. I used the post office when I did the Etape - I think it was about £15 extra for a week with hazadous activities. Easy to arrange online.

I go with a days cover from:

The year I didn't, I ended up being ambulanced up the Alpe lay in the medical centre thinking that it was going to cost me $$$$ (it didn't but I like to have cover for these events now).

I usually get my annual insurance through dogtag.

A bit more expensive than the standard ones, but cover for nearly everything and apparently
    pay out better/easier than most.

Just get your European Health Insurance Card, EHIC. It allows you to get health care in Europe.

It's not a full replacement for insurance but it means basic things like first aid and hospital care are covered in case the worst happens.
