Hi there.
We're planning a family holiday west of Bordeaux for the month of July. We'll be based in a tiny nowhere town about 120k west and north-ish of Bordeaux, not far from a place called Riberac.
Anyway, we'll have our bikes and if anyone has any ride/route recommendations around there it'd be great. We'll find our own local rides but wouldn't be averse to the odd drive to ride if there were routes worthy of it - I know of course there are the alps and pyrenees but that'd be a bit far to go tbh, unless we got someone to mind the kids for a few days and we could drive and stay overnight.
Hope to catch the tour in and out of Bordeaux too

I think you'll be 120 km north east of Bordeaux, not west, else you'll be soaked
I don't know if any of the links towards the end of this thread (the Dordogne, Lot and Vazere valleys bit) may be useful as a starting point? I'd be interested in anything else you discover that looks good route-wise. Cheers.0 -
Ha ha. Oops. Yeah, East indeed it is.
Did you mean to post a link to "this thread" you mentioned??0 -
 Opps me also:-

A few pointers maybe. If you glean anything more of interest, then it'd be good to hear. Cheers.0 -
aogan,
I got the Lonely Planet Cycling France book from the library. It has a Dordogne section (Dordogne, Vezere and Lot valleys) in which a 9 day "Caves, Cousine and Chateaux" cycle route is described. The initial bits are similar-ish to the mapped route I posted at the end of the thread linked to above.
e.g.
Day 1 has a circuit based out of Les Eyzies, with a mixture of Dordogne and Vezere valleys. 74km
Day 2 is Leyzies to Montignac. 27km
Looks like useful info for planning your own routes. Plus, suggestions for side trips, places of interest to visit en velo etc. May be worth a look if you can get hold of the book...0 -
Hi aogon - just back from a week in the Dordogne and the cycling was fantastic - rolling hills with some sweeping descents and beautiful views. We were staying near Sarlat and I just went out each morning and rode the honeycomb of little lanes in the area. I stayed away from Sarlat itself as the traffic is horrible even in early June.
I think a decent map and make it up as you go along - many of the roads have the Michelin green stripe so I don't think you can go too far wrong.
Enjoy
