Hiya
Can anyone recommend a good, comprehensive, bike repair book for old road bikes, for old road bikes? (my model is mid 80s...).
If it covers modern mountain bikes also, all the better! 8)
Thanks
Chris

I've used Richard Ballantine's 'Richard's Bicycle Book' from the 1980's onwards (there are many editions, mine's a revised one from 1984). It's good in that it actually explains the principles (and even philosophies) of what you're trying to do in a way that's easy to relate to - in fact it makes useful reading for anyone learning basic mechanical stuff. Of course it's been overtaken by the recent surge of different technology (e.g. Aheadsets), but as you're working on a 1980's bike I would recommend it.
He did make one infamous mistake in failing to note that British fixed BB cups use a left-hand thread (my copy has a pencil 'note to self').
