Probably purchasing one of these but have seen some negative comments on the maps available.
Most of reviews seem to be quite old and wondered if anyone has any experience of the currently available maps particularly the free ones.
Thanks

the free maps that I have for mtb need a lot of work to get the best out of, they are missing quite a lot of detail.
the garmin maps on dvd are the best option in my view. They are expensive but have information not found anywhere else. They can give you directions to the nearest place of interest (shops, hotel etc.) and give you the phone number.
I use the garmin europe road maps with a openstreetmap contour map of the uk. Garmin give you free route planning software and map managing tools so you only have the mapping on the unit that you need.
That said, the units are not problem free, but they are very useful.
shop around for the best prices on garmin stuff, Handtec do good deals.--

I've got the official garmin micro SD UK map. Really pleased with it.0

mine was bundled with the "city navigator europe nt" map
it is not just cities, even in rural algarve it's got all the roads, right down to many that are just unsurfaced tracks, really excellent if you cycle in europe
you can view an interactive copy of the same map online...

...at the top of the map, click the "click here for interactive map" and you'll get a window open up, you can pan/zoom right down to the most detailed levelmy bike - faster than god's and twice as shiny0 -
The UK road maps have been very useful.
The Garmin software is pretty good, and you can export the GXP files to third party programs if you so wish.
The UK Topo maps are by no means OS quality, but theye are good enough to be used as a guide to an OS map.
The only issue I have is the screen is quite small, so navigating on the hoof can be tricky, and also the text used to designate place names can be large and smother the screen.
On the whole im happy with the 705 and have used it loads over the past couple of months for both cycling, walking and climbing.0 -
