Livestrong brand....

I decided to pick up some Oakley Jawbones over the weekend and went for the Livestrong colour-way as
a. I liked them
and
b. perhaps despite not liking Lance as much as I did, I have had serious personal issues with cancer scares and close family have perished due to the illness so I massively support the ethos of fighting cancer. Of course, forum members have and are currently fighting it.
So how do other cyclists perceive the Livestrong branding? Do you look at people wearing it and cringe or do you think about that fact a little amount has gone to cancer research?
Just wondered.

As much as i don`t like Lance I do like the fact that he is doing something to help others. So wear those livestrong oakleys with pride i say!0

Unfortunate or not for me I have worn the black/yellow colour scheme for a few years now. I bought a Giant team Once frame which is black and yellow and got a selev helmet which I repainted in similar colours.
I am not a LA fan and was annoyed when he or whoever chose the colours for the Livestrong :x
Don't get me wrong, credit where its due for support of cancer, just use different colours please, Lance.
Too late now of course, perhaps I should have patented them'Collapse the Light into Earth'0 -

For sure. My Mum spent the best part of two years in Hospital battling aggressive breast cancer and somehow after 4 operations, chemo and radio as well as major back surgery is alive an well today.0 -
Lance for me is one of my heroes. Got me into road cycling and, god forbid, I pray that Walsh, etc are a million miles away from the mark with their insinuations.
The LiveStrong brand is something I strongly believe in, it is a fantastic movement and if you take the step back and read into some of the achievements, it is truly amazing.
So yes, wear them with pride and I think there will be detractors, but sod them.0 -
There would be detractors whatever team/charity colour scheme you wear.
But remember that little insects are very attracted to yellow so expect them to be flying around your eyes!
May Livestrong live long.
Can we fix it?
Yes we can!0 -
If you like the colourscheme and they're what you want buy them. It's good that a %age will go towards the fight against cancer. Otherwise buy something else and give a donation to a cancer charity anyway.Tail end Charlie
The above post may contain traces of sarcasm or/and bullsh*t.0 -

Its nice to hear that your Mum fought well and beat that awful disease.just hearing the word mentioned scares me.I have a friend who has been fighting cancer for quite a while now she thought she had the all clear after her treatments of chemo etc.But resent tests have shown there are traces in her bone marrow. The Doctors insist that its no where near as potent as the previous treated and they can sort it.
She`s one brave women and has taken the resent news rather well.i just wish i had the inner strength that some of these suvivors have.Or if the worst ever happens that i can find it somewhere with in myself to beat it like your mother has.
All the best matey.0 -
The Livestrong brand has done some great work raising money to help with cancer. Particularly since Lance had testicular cancer which is common but not very high profile compared to things like breast etc.
I just find Lance's Messiah complex a real turn off. So I wouldn't buy it myself, but anyone else is free to buy what they like!0 -
+1 for livestrong and Lance... I know because I have cancer! (throat cancer- and no I don't smoke or drink)
Messiah complex?... Have you read his books?... Trust me when you hear the words 'i'm afraid it's bad news you have cancer' as I did last Tuesday, the massive positive of Lances story is something to believe in and focus on... He survived, I can too!
Bristol Pete wishing all the best to your Mum, and Carbon same for your friend, it's great that we have the medical professionalism in this country, they are fantastic!! They are the real superstars (they should be paid like premier league footballers I reckon)0 -

I agree. Yes he may be a bit big headed but jesus, if you had overcame what he has and achieved what he has, I'm damn sure ALL would be a bit big headed too!
There will always be LA detractors and that's fair enough but all we are going on is soundbites and rumour. I prefer to believe him to be a nice bloke, albeit guarded.
And good luck on your fight against the big C. It can be done!!!0 -
I've just finished reading the book by Geoff Thomas about his fight against leukaemia and riding the Tour.
Another inspirational character.

Hey thanks for the tip, I need plenty of reading for chemo times. I will look that one up on tinternet mate.0

I got me a pair of livestrong flak jacket shades.
Awesome color scheme + $20 for the cancer charity = one happy customer
I like the way they combined the urge to buy stuff & the urge to help others.0 -
Livestrong foundation is something great.
For all the Lance snipers they cannot deny that the creation of the Livestrong foundation is driving cancer research forward. It gives hope to all.
Hats off to Lance. Unless you have battled and won you cannot understand the drive and motivation to try and help others.0 -
Messiah complex? - a brash super-confident Texan - stop the presses
He's achieved far more success than any of his now proven to be doped colleagues managed in the blue riband event of world cycling
If clean he's a superman, if doped he's no worse than the rest and still beat them comfortably, either way he's won his bragging rights over his rivals.
If I set up a cancer charity in memory of my older relatives who've succumbed and joy that my son survived his tumour would it have made 1/1000th of the impact and publicity both of which translate to money that Armstrong has achieved for Livestrong.
whatever people think of him, the charity seems to be doing good work and for that it needs a well known figurehead who can guarantee to get column inches in the papers and push the cause - maybe Armtrongs persona is carefully managed to keep controversy and therefore limelight on him.0 -
Agree with pretty much the whole thread.
Whether you are pro or anti Lance the bike rider, you cannot be against Lance the charity campaigner.
Livestrong has been a success and he should rightly get plaudits for it.0 -

I don't think Livestrong does much for research etc. It's more about offering support / advice, that kind of thing.Fckin' Quintana … that creep can roll, man.0 -

He's not a scientist or a doctor so unlikely to be sitting in the lab experimenting on rats and such.
He (name, persona, history) adds value to the Livestrong products and entices people to buy and donate money to cancer research.
Assumption is that more money you throw at a research, more likely the success.
So actually he is helping cancer research.0 -

Maybe, but my point was more about Livestrong. If you donate a dollar to them it doesn't go on research. If you want to direct it towards research you're better off donating to Cancer Research UK or something.Fckin' Quintana … that creep can roll, man.0 -
I'm not suggesting that I purchased the shades to help fight cancer. But, the $20 donation helped to nudge me toward the purchase.
On the other hand, if haven't bought the shades it is very unlikely that I'd donate to charity on my own (shame on me - but, hey, at least I'm honest here).
I think this is quite typical behaviour.
As a result, brands like Livestrong do help bring money to cancer research - and also raise awareness.
It works in the same way as that CO2 offsetting donation when you purchase plane ticket, but Livestrong has much much better story behind it.0
