2008 GT Avalanche 1.0??

Hi all,
After a cracking weekend of biking in Devon with some mates I'm researching buying a first mountain bike. I must say, I have found the initial learning curve quite steep and the more I read, the more confused I get!!
I have recently finished reading the MBR Dirty Dozen article and the implication seemed to be that you're getting a lot less for your money these days. This is pretty frustrating because my budget is quite limited and I have just missed the window of opportunity to use my companies cycle scheme!
Anyway, I have seen a 2008 GT Avalanche 1.0 (new) going for £350. Could somebody tell me whether this represents a decent option compared to the current 2010 models out there? It seems like it would considering the latest model Avalanche 1.0 is significantly more expensive?
Also, I plan to divide my time between doing a short commute to work on a day-to-day basis and fairly sedate off-road stuff in my spare time. I presume the Avalanche is a decent choice for this?
Cheers, Pete

Good bike, great price, only the Carrera Kraken really compares to that.0

Yeah, it looks like a cool bike although I just checked closer and it's only 16" frames being sold which I suspect are just a little bit small for me, I'm 5 7"...
...I will check out the Kracken

It is hard to say without trying the particular mode, but I'd say the 16 GT was right in the ball park.
But yep, try a Kraken or even the GT Aggressors there if in the sale.0
