Ideas for sus fork retro upgrade

Hi
I have a '97 Gary Fisher Tassajara with rigid forks i'm looking to upgrade to a pair of sus forks. The bike has a 1 & 1/8th headset (quill stem) and takes a threaded steerer of 210mm. Due to the nature and length requirements i'm having trouble sourcing a fork the only new option being SR Suntour XCR it seems.
Any ideas/forks suitable would be most welcome.
Ideally a fork that does justice to the frame which is in good nick and upgraded drivetrain would be ideal but realistically any suggestions would be grand.
Cheers

If it really is a 9/8" headset size, then your best bet would be to get a threadless headset, a new stem, and a more modern fork. You won't find much worth having these days with a quill stem unfortunately.0
