Just thought I'd share a couple of pics of my new Orange 5 build. Bought the frame a couple of weeks ago and proceeded to take the 'as new' stuff off my old Gary Fisher (http://www.bikeradar.com/forums/viewtop ... t=12690455). Anything that wasn't as new (XT F&R Mech, Chain, SRAM PG980 Cassette) was bought from CRC.

When I picked it up it had a load of stickers all over it so I hairdryered them off and gave the frame a good T-Cut and polish. It came up lovely so I decided at this point that there was no point getting it re-painted - I like this colour too. I bought a new decal set direct from Orange (not bad - for £18 I got all the frame stickers including the little tiny ones and a new metal headtube badge). I then started to put the bits form my GF onto it. Bottom bracket (Truvative Gigapipe) no problem, headset (Cane Creek) no problem, front mech - hmmm the one from my GF wont fit. So a new XT front mech was ordered from CRC along with a new silver KMC chain. Then.... as it was my birthday I though I'd also treat myself to a new XT Rear mech. I built the rest up over the past 2 weeks and took it out on Tuesday night to test it but what a dissappointment - the chain was slipping. It turned out to be a knackered cassette to I ordered a SRAM PG980 from CRC and fitted that last night.

Straight after fitting it the problem went so I took it over Cannock Chase (off piste - not the Dog / Monkey - King Willies trail and a few others if any of you know it???). It rides really well. Downhill and over the rough stuff it just inspires confidence and I can go infinitley quicker than on the GF.

However climbing is, I think, a bit more difficult on this. Not sure if it's a bit heavier or that I need to get used to the different geometry but it's like I'm pushing another half a gear. I reckon it WILL be down to getting used to the geometry change. Particularly because last time I changed a bike, the first time I took it out it absolutely knackered me and that was all down to the different frame size / angles. Same when I swapped to SPD's and my cleats were in the wrong place - totally knackered me out.

Anyway, time will tell. Here's a couple of pics and a breakdown of the spec. Hope you like......

Can I just add that I really appreciate the help that some of you guys have given me in the Tech forum. Thanks!!

thats a lovely bike. nice spec.

I recently bought my first full suspension - Commencal Meta and know exactly what you mean about getting used to it. At the beginning it felt very sluggish compared to my Cube HT, but the good news is you soon get used to it, and after 4 or 5 weeks I cant honestly say it feels any worse going up hill than my hardtail.

    Have fun!

Took the 5 out again for the second time. Starting to get used to it now.

I was amazed at the difference that I am starting to notice between this and the GF Cake. The GF was a good bike but the 5 is something else. For example, there is a particular climb which is very steep and I know of no-one that has ever been able to ride to the top. I've tried tens of times. Yet on the 5 I managed it a piece of cake. I also pushed on on some of the longer climbs yesterday and found them easier than when I first took it out last Thursday - I think I'm just getting used to the geometry.

My confidence on the downhill and rougher stuff is also increasing and I can go soooo much faster. Jumping is also much easier on the 5. I managed a 13ft jump (length - measured approx) yesterday - I would have struggled to do an 8 ft on the GF from the same ramp.

    What an amazing bike.

Nice bike, same colour as one I had, Chrome Grey possibly the best colour for a 5

it's a '06 frame though as the '07 frames had the kinked top tube, more folds on the downtube, no plate at the downtube/headtube, a Lite Beam VII Swingarm & a CNC'd shock mount on the swingarm ;)
