stem measurement

I'm wanting to fit a shorter stem but before I order one I need to know how to measure my existing stem so I dont end up with the same or even longer length
Is it centre to centre?

    just to cloudy the issue....most makers measure centre-to-centre half way up (looking from the side) whereas others (minority) measure C2C along the top of the stem. The difference between the two methods can be 5mm ish.
