I'm currently attempting my 1st frame build up and I have the Ultegra shifters from 2007, I need to get a new derailleur and was looking at going up to a Dura Ace but am I right in saying that you can't cross over with the new stuff?
If not can I use the newer Ultegra with the old shifters or is it a whole new complete set of shifters needed?

Rear derailleur doesn't make much difference. But there needs to be compatibility between the shifters, chain and cassette-i.e. all 9 speed or all 10 speed etc.
The rear derailleur doesn't know or care how many gears it is serving-it's the pull ratio dictated by the sti's that matters most and this has to be compatible with the cassette and chain.
Chainset doesn't matter much either- ie 9 sp chainset will work on 10 speed set-up etc.0 -
10 speed and its for the front derailleur. (forgot to mention those critical factoids!)There is never redemption, any fool can regret yesterday...

Think the shifters and front mech have to be from the same series, ie. Durace 7900 and Ultegra 6700, or Druace 7800 and Ultegra 6600. Also believe the new levers don't work with the old brakes as different ratios!
Just look at the Shimano compatibility chart http://bike.shimano.com/publish/content ... le.html/01)%20Drivetrain%20Compatability%20Chart.pdf0 -
Cheers, really helpful. There is never redemption, any fool can regret yesterday...
