There is a route in the Rivington area near Bolton which will be the closest for you.
The North Wales routes are very good and not far away. The hills have eyes.0 -
I've heard of a place called Healey Nab think it's near Chorley. Not been myself but I believe it has man made trails there or as said previously there is loads of natural trails to ride at Rivington. Hope this helps.

Depends what kind of routes you are looking for,if its just general cross country riding linking the canals with haigh hall and wigan flashes can put miles under the wheels. If its singletrack and techy routes your after you are a bit limited.Rivington is a good starting point for natural routes, if you have transport then gisburn, lee quarry and llandegla are within an hour and a halves drive. My personal favourite is lee quarry and is only an hour from wigan.0

It's possible to link Haigh Hall and Rivington in to one big loop using minimal amounts of road (just a stretch through Adlington and down in to Rivington)
There's a handily placed disused railway line at Red Rock which connects you up to Adlington and you can get to Red Rock from Haigh Hall along the canal bank.
We often used to stay on the canal right through to Chorley, from there we'd go through to Angelzarke and along the country roads, occasionally passing on to bridleways, to find our way back over to Rivington.0 -
If you just want a place to just session and learn on in the north west, there are 2 new short trails in Blackburn in Billinge woods built by Phil Saxena and his companys.
Although short one is quite techy with a black option and the other is more flowy through the trees with boardwalk that goes up and between trees.
I've ridden them both and if you just want to ride and play and not go for a long ride

If you just want a quick blast at night for an hour or so, Borsedane wood in between Westhoughton and Aspull is a safe bet. Ok its not the best singletrack but there are plenty of footpaths in the area for some slightly illegal riding (hehe. In the woods themselevs there are a few chutes to session and you can generally lark about with whatever you can find0
