Only for climbing out of the seat..I think it was a 90's rage to be honest. I don't think that you will gain much..and IMO they look a bit naff today..If its a comfort thing for long XC days etc..ergo grips may be more your thing..but on a FS they may look a bit (cough) girly0

I really don't like ergon grips on a mtb- find it messes with my grip. I used to swear by bar ends- I don't have any these days, but if I was building a proper head down sprint bike they'd almost certainly be on there. As said, get a cheapy pair, try them out.Rock Lobster 853, Trek 1200 and a very old, tired and loved Apollo Javelin.0

bar ends are really suited for xc riding , i dont know any xc riders who dont have them , they help climbing yeah they probably are a 90s thing but thats what mountain biking was about back then, depends what kind off riding you do try em and seeanthem x with many upgrades0

I've got a pair on mine, godsend on longer rides because you can use your biceps on a climb rather than triceps. But then again, mine is a rigid with narrow flat bars But yeah just buy a cheapy pair, whats the worst that could happen?0

Sorry, couldn't resist, that has more or less become my standard response to 'what's the worst that could happen'. :roll:Rock Lobster 853, Trek 1200 and a very old, tired and loved Apollo Javelin.0

I'm just about to commit a fashion crime and put bar ends on my Soul. Ended up "end gripping" the bars at 10UTB and tonight on a local ride, its clear I'll be able to climb better with them so why not?
But they have to be the right bar ends What works best with lock-on grips? No Ergons, I have those on the commuter and they're ace but I don't like them offroad. No big ugly gaps either! And not too heavy Any suggestions? cane Creek Ergos?Uncompromising extremist0 -
I have the cane creeks and would buy them again if I needed to replace them. One of the best buys ever!!0

Yeah, they seem like the right tool for the job really. Guess I'll give them a whirl.Uncompromising extremist0

i bought some the other day because i need more riding positions, bar ends are the solution to that, the ones i've just bought looked ideal. check out "GUB Ergonomic Lock-on Grips with Bar Ends" on ebay0

Northwind check out Tioga PowerStud 6 Barends, they're amazingly simple and effective i just needed something bulkier in the palm0

I couldn't do without bar ends especially for climbing. I find my wrists suffer when out of the saddle climbing without bar ends. The bar ends put my wrists in a far more comfortable position. I've only cheapy bikehut ones at the minute but was considering some BBB ergo sticks. Similar idea to the Cane Creek ones but half the price. Maybe not as smart though.
