Trying out bikes

I am often told by friends and by looking on forums like this to try bikes out for size and feel etc, however when i go to various LBS in my locality they don't have the size of bike i wish to try in stock.
For example I would like to try a Trek 2.1/ Wilier Laverado and some others. I problably need a m or large size. Neither in stock.
So what am i to do? I have had a bike fitting and know some of the dimensions i need, but would still like to test ride the bikes.
I live in Birmingham.

This is so true. Going off manufacturers measures i am s/xs size bike. i went to my local bike shop and actually measured perfect on a medium.. this is because I'm not using it for TT or pro racing and have come from a MTB. Have the bike shops offered to get in the size frame you need?Level 3 Road & Time Trial Coach, Level 2 Track Coach.

Having measurements from a bike fit is ok but I wouldn't be happy unless I could physically try out the bike. All maufacturers are slightly different with sizing and it's a bit of a risk unless you're prepared to send the bike back (with all the bullshize and messing about that goes with it) IMHO.

I never got to test ride my new bike before i had a fitting at Paul Hewitts and i ended up buying a Kuota Kharma. Can say i can't fault it and i put my trust in him to fit me to a frame/bike.0
