If you come off good and proper and get treated by someone who knows what they're doing, you will soon wish you shaved your legs when they start scrubbing, it is not a gentle process!
And to be honest when you do it you can see all your muscles pop out, especially when used in conjunction with some tanning oil
But I suppose ultimately it comes with the territory. A bit like Rugby players putting theirs balls in each others mouths etc etc"A cyclist has nothing to lose but his chain"

Except armpits and arms... this. Mainly for vanity, I feel my (admittedly small) muscles look better shaved, and it makes me feel like a more serious cyclist (although my bank balance already proves that!)
No exceptions. Dems da rulez.0 -
first timer this year and despite my wife constantly telling me its weird, I like it
Calf muscles really pop now and with some decent sun recently the tan looks much better. Dont plan to fall off any time soon so not done it for any reason other than vanity and to see what its like.Your Past is Not Your Potential...0 -
Since I posted my original question this has been written up in a recent magazine article in CW. Apparently it started almost 100 years ago and was a reaction to the massage process. Apparently massages are better on smooth legs but more importantly the liniment oils and potions they used were quite potent, thick and a bit smelly. On hairy legs it was dificult to clean off properly following a massage and left the poor cyclist with matted hairy legs that had an odd odour.
So shaving legs started and seemed to stick to become de rigeur for the pro and serious cyclist.
I will be giving it a go for my forthcoming L2P ride - if its not for me then I can grow the hair back. If I like it after trying it then maybe I will stick with it.
Many seem to scoff at the smoothed legs but have not tried it which really makes their opinion count for little other than they don't like the look of it/thought of it. Join the party I say and give it a go cos if its then not for you it can grow back and at least you can say you've given it a go and can pass comment from experience.Trek Madone 5.9

Used to do it years ago but then stopped cycling so not bothered since.
Been back on the bike for 12 months and thinking of doing it again - apart from all the other reasons given I hate the look of my leg hair full of flies.0 -
I could see the advantage for definite, post ride, and this is MTB not road posing, in spotting ticks that have latched on on some of the more overgrown highland trails....0

I shave my legs, and still feel all manly...
Hairy legs does not a man make!...
Seems to me to be a little like refusing to wear a pink shirt, because it's gurly....
MTFU!....
Yep... I wear pink shirts without feeling less 'manly' than a man in a black shirt!Start with a budget, finish with a mortgage!0 -
