Can I use ordinary friction shifters on a three speed Sturmey Archer internal hub?

Never tried it but wouldn't the spring keep pulling the lever back unless you really grollied the friction setting?

Any more than the spring in a rear mech would?

No. The indexing on a SA hub is even more critical than a deraileur. If not spot on the gear will just slip out of mesh. Painful if out of the saddle at the time.

That's a nuisance. I have bought a three speed hub as the existing 5 speed SA Sprinter Elite is broken and I thought replacing would be a better option. I have the five speed indexer on the handlebars, but it is pretty simplistic, TBH. I was hoping to use that.
