Cool On-One Inbred travel bike.

I work for an airline and spend a lot of time away but don't enjoy lugging a large bike box around with me so I got a new On-One inbred frame, sent it off to Argos Cycles who cut it up and put S&S couples in the frame. Got it resprayed, moved some lugs and with some clever little tricks it now all fits into a large Delsey suitcase.
No more bike boxes, no excess baggage fees. Everyone thinks that it is a normal suitcase. It weights 20kg all up so well within the limit of 23kg. There is loads of space around the frame and shoes and helmet all fit in.
The wheels fit just, but without the tyres on. They fit in the box and using clips to hold the brake cables in place I can use hydraulic XT brakes and only have to unclip the cable housing from the frame.
The whole bike takes 20 mins to build up and about the same to break it down. I have custom made some frame protectors that fit each tube. I also needed to have wheels that I could remove the disc from easily so it wouldn't get bent in the case so went for the Hope three bolt hubs as they are about 30 seconds each for removing the disc.
I have just got back from New York where I spent many happy hours riding around Central Park and over into New Jersey.
I love the inbred frame but now I have a bike that I can take away with me all the time and on top of that I think it looks quite good too.
Just interested to see what everyone else makes of it.

Shit that is GENIUS!!!
I think everyone needs one of these.0 -
Ha ha, awesome, I like that, those joint pieces look good.
I know someone who designs and builds bikes for a living in the States, this is his 29er folding bike

 Amazing.. I really like that, I'd like it even without the trick of it being a 'travel' bike!!
Nice work.. you should send the guys at On One your pics, see what they make of it!
Top marks to Argos as well! Nice job mate0 -
Somebody bought (seemingly) this exact bike up very recently. Have you been featured in some newspapers or something?
Excellent idea.0 -

He already has
And has already been discussed here on this very website.
I must also add that this bike cool, and would make be an amazing xc bike on its own without being able to fold up!0 -
Awesome, simply awesome.0

the bike is pretty good looking but those unions look to be absolutely beautifully made. its a very clever idea.0
-
sh.t that is nice!!!0
-
folding or not, that's still one of the nicest inbreds I've seen on here - even including mine..
Has it made any noticeable difference to the ride, as a matter of interest...?0 -
That is fantastic! Argos have done a stand up job. What We Achieve In Life, Echoes In Eternity0

Yeah Scott, given your record with breaking other frames was it that sensible to cut one in half :-)
I think it looks awesome, really nicely done.0 -

Somehow missed that.. lol, cheers Toby0 -
I have now put some On-One rigid carbon forks on the bike along with a pair of Hope Mini Race brakes. The bike is getting lighter all the time.
I have done nearly 60,000 miles flying this bike around the world and ridden in many different countries and it still works so well.
I love it, and now it rides so much better.

Just out in Seattle and visited Elliott Bay cycles and bought a new case for the travel bike. It is the S & S own specific case. Really well made but being 12" deep it is a bit larger than I would have liked.
This does mean that I will be able to keep the bike a little more built and should only take about 10mins to build up. I'll get some more pictures of the bike in the new box when I get back.
Apart from being my little baby that travels the world with me the bike is so nice to ride and now with the On-One rigid carbon forks it rides really sweet.
Did a long ride in Denver last week and the 20 minute descent off the Rockies was handled without a problem and the new Hope Race X2 brakes are so small and light but are perfect.
I keep my twitter feed posted most days and lots of riding pictures from around the world, sign up and see where I have managed to get to.
More pictures to come.Follow me on twitter: @OnOneScott

Here are the pictures of the new travel case made by S&S who make the couples in the frame. I hope this case lasts longer than the last one.
As you can see the case is almost square so fits the wheels almost perfectly and the frame and parts fit around the outside
When it is all closed up it weights 21kg and the limit for the aircraft is 23kg so well under there and the size is just within the limitations so no excess baggage costs.
This shows the case next to a standard 26" MTB wheel. It shows how exact the case is, but the tyres need to be let down to fit in. It takes me 10 minutes to build up.Follow me on twitter: @OnOneScott

Thats healthy cool!!
Nice work!0 -
genius and a great bit of engineering by the looks of it. I love that, well done0
-
hi - quick question - do you use cable splitters or just loosen them, undo the couplings and fold the bike?0
-
Weeve.
Yes I use cable splitters made by Thorn and they enable me to take the end of the bike off so much quicker. They just screw into each other and take seconds to split.

Wow, thinking out side the box to fit a bike in a box!
Brilliant!
0 -
Quite a nice looking case man! Your a pilot and you have to pay excess baggage? That's a bit unfair I think haha0
-
thanks re: image of splitters. had assumed that was case ...had seen this version from ritchey
http://www.excelsports.com/main.asp?pag ... de=RITCHEY
hydraulic cables I assume you just fold around...
Just bought a Thorn Ripio frame to build up as a flight unbreakable tourer which, with the rack taken off on arrival somewhere is a decent mtb . Was going to chop it too - but given that I live in NL and fly lots for business with KLM and they dont charge for bikes no need in short term. As such Im on the look out for a hard case which is at 110cm long by 55cm wide...mtb frames arent so big to attract too much attention if the forks are dropped out. My race bikes have to travel in a ££ giant 13.5kg hard shell ... and that really is a royal pain the x.0 -
ps I admire the image where youre using a towel to protect your new box from the garage floor. Valient effort... but as a pilot Im sure youre familar with only way baggage handlers can express themselves when they feel particularly put upon by management expectations to work harder...ie give the fragile label bag the special "lets see if we can really fxxx it" treatment My http://www.roofbox.co.uk/bike-cases/bikecases.php looks like an elephant has sat on it.0
