    Yep.

I do it and have no problems. I may get some road pedals eventually but at the moment I'm happy with my Spuds.

I actually don't like the look of road shoes. Much prefer MTB shoes

    I do.

I come from the era when Shimano made single-sided SPD pedals for road, and double for MTB. Everything was interchangeable.

Now I still use them. Don't want to have one pair for road and another for offroad / commuting / winter.

Are there any good road bike pedals that work with MTB SPD's?

I had a (very) quick look but couldn't see any. I currently use some chunky MTB pedals on mine, but would like to swap them for something a bit more suitable if there is such a thing.

I use th M520's and I LOVE them so much..

easy to clip in/out, double sided, and you dont have to walk like a retarded monkey off the bike.

I am a big fan of the SPDs too and use them on my road and hybrid bikes but haven't used road pedals/shoes so I cannot compare the relative merits.

The M520s are a very basic model offering good performance (specially when paired with decent shoes) and great VFM. If you have a few extra quid then I think the M540s are the better option. Slighly smoother, slightly better quality, slightly lighter. I don't think the marginal benefits merit swapping out any current functioning M520s but the M540s are a good option if you need a new set (after a snowbound winter, etc.).

I use mountain bike spds, the huge plus for me is that the shoes have recessed cleats which mean i can walk in them.

Using M520's with M076 shoes on my road bike day-in day-out and also for the longer weekend blasts.

    Can't fault them.

I bought my first road bike in January along with some integra road pedals and equally expensive shoes... Got a great deal with them but truth be told after using them for a few months I hate them. They didn't have scare the life out of me on a number of occassions which in turned affected my confidence on the bike which in turn nearly put me off the whole damn lot of it including the bike. Recently changed to SPD's and I'm loving it - would heartily recommend them to anyone!

I used to get acheing feet on long rides (eg 3 hours+). Thought this was normal then I got SPD-SL and some cheapy new shoes.

It's either the shoes or the pedals but I think they're massively better for long rides. Yes a pain to walk in but then I cycle in them. Big platform = better foot support plus I'm much more confident that they won't disengage all of a sudden on a sprint.

I made the decision to jump to road shoes from my mtb shoes because I didn't like the flex in the them. But found that I couldn't get away with stif road shoes & MTB SPD pedals, I could feel the axle through the sole. So I invested in the following below & what a difference, I would put up with road SPD's till you get used to them & you won't look back.

They're an absolute bargain & the Shimano road cleats are very easy to walk in.

I'm running Time ATAC ROCs on the CX with a pair of Specilaized comp shoes and I'm quite happy with them and I don't fall over in the cake shop.

When I was really into my cycling in the early 90s I had spds on my mountain bikes and Look pedals on the road bike. Got to say I loved the float on the Looks compared to the spds and the Times give me the same feeling.

I think at the end of the day its down to personal choice - much like women.

XT spds on both bikes. M747 on the SS and m770 on the flappy paddle gearshift bike. Couldn't justify the cost of two seperate shoe types for different bikes.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

+1 - M540s I think they are. I've always had MTP pedals on road bikes since we moved from toe cages. Don't know what the fuss is tbh. They do the job; they do it well.
  • I used to use the same shoes for both mtn & road but found getting them dry after a muddy ride on the dirt in time for an outing on the road (sometimes the following day) a real ball-ache. Consequently, got myself some nice road shoes and all is well.

Is that because your laptop now has spd pedals?

Did you attach yourself while you did your lines?

I swap between SPD-SL pedals and A520 SPD pedals on my road bike.

With the right shoes (I use M063 which have a fairly stiff sole) the SPD pedals are great, they support better than a two-sided SPD pedal. Use them on touring country lane type rides where I get off to stop at a cafe or walk around, saves wearing out the SPD-SL cleats which are horrible to walk on.

The SPD-SL's have a bit better power transfer, and with the R075 shoes I use are a bit better ventilated and lighter, use them on faster rides/roads.

I have A520s on my road bike too, they look a bit more "roadie" than the double sided ones and they're a bit lighter :-)

Just got some Shimano A600's which I'm really pleased with, and they'd probably fool most hardcore roadies. :D

They do scratch up a bit with use but have a very positive click in and out. Using Mavic Razor shoes, there's very little float (good) unless I use the brass spacers that came with the shoes.
