This is the first giro i've really watched closely, so forgive me if i'm missing something, but whats with all the guys running alongside the peloton in their pants? It can't be that hot

There was a particularly nasty pair of baggy grey Y-fronts at around 80km to go today - truly revolting. It looked like he was smuggling snakes down there.
