Loose cassette

My Shimano 9 speed HG50 cassette keeps coming loose.

More noticeable when pedalling or freewheeling in the 7th, 8th and 9th sprockets over rough ground.

It's been to the LBS once and they diagnosed it as a problem with the pawls on the DT Swiss freehub, These were replaced and the cassette was tightened.

Now it's come loose again with lateral movement and that familiar clanking noise whenever I'm in any of the smaller sprockets.

Have looked on Park Tools and Sheldon Brown and it would seem that there may be a problem with the freehub splines or the cassette itself.

Any ideas?

I had this happen repeatedly on my XT cassette and hub, in the end I put threadlock on the cassette lockring and tightened it to 40nm - never happened since.

    Threadlock being an adhesive, right?

Yes, it stops things getting loose but you can still undo it when necessary - there are different strengths for different applications. See this:

I use Pacer Zap Z-42 which is medium strength and seems to be ideal.

to me it just sounds like a bit more force is needed on the lock ring. the thin washer is present?

    Nick,

    Thanks.

I'll find out, I'm taking it in (again) this afternoon.

    Cheers all.

Took it in to the LBS, and after removing the lock nut and taking out the outer washer they cleaned it, put some loctite on the nut and tightened it as hard as they could.

It certainly doesn't wobble or move now so once I've tested it I'll let you all know.
