I'm looking for a bike around the £400 -£500 and have so far looked at a Specialized Hardrock Comp Disc and the Giant Talon 3, and have now just come across the BeOne Kosmos. It's £499 from Chain Reaction Cycles and seems to be really well specced with Shimano Deore used pretty much throughout. The only problem is there doesn't appear to be any reviews online and the bike is only for sale through Chain Reaction cycles and due to the distance I won't be able to try it before ordering. So I just wondered if anyone has any experience of this bike or any of their mtb's for that matter. Cheers

Looks good and fairly light for the money. Certainly miles ahead of the Talon, and a fair bit better value than the Hardrock.

SS you didn't mention this bike has no Disc brakes? ... must be after some good night out.
    What could have been (Video)

I'll choose not put too much stake into someone's opinion who is admittingly terrible though

Yes I guessed they have sacrificed disk brakes for the Deore mechs etc, but I figured I could always add some nice hydraulic disc brakes myself. Just worried that I won't be able to try the bike first to see how it rides and what size I need.

You don't always need or want disc brakes. Some budget ons are crap.

Yeah, I'm sure the v brakes will be fine for me to start off with. Are Chain Reaction Cycles fairly reliable does anyone know?

If its your size it will annihilate the Beone.

V Brakes can be just as good as disc's IHMO

To be honest I think the 16" will be just a bit too small. I'm 5'10 with an inside leg of 30-31" and a 17-18" frame is about my sweet spot. Thanks for the link though, there's some great prices and they have this Giant available in a 18" frame which I might have a look at. What do you think? Is it still a better bet than the beone? http://www.paulscycles.co.uk/products.php?plid=m1b0s2p2287[/url]

The fork is a bit better, but they are pretty similar, for the same money you also get this, with again a slightly better fork

Or for £30 more you get this,

with a much better and more versatile fork because of its travel adjust, and IHMO better brakes, but it is a bit more heavy duty than the Kona

thel33ter with these bikes you are really spoiling me..

Seriously though, I'd seen the Kona already and it looks great and that Mongoose looks really good too, thanks. What do you mean by more heavy duty though? I'm going to have a drive over to Paul's Cycles I think and try a few out, it's a long old drive, 2+ hours from Rugby but it'll be worth it. Cheers for your help.

Paul's Cycles doesn't have a shop as such so I can't try any of these bikes before buying which is a bit of a concern. However I have just discovered the Rockrider 8.1 which seems to be great value for money and there are Decathlon stores nearby where I can try one out. Looks like I'm going to Merry Hill at the weekend!

I mean it has a stronger frame, but will be heavier too. It depends on how you ride really, if you are like me and plow down stuff as straight as possible then it will be good, but if you spend most of your time on fireroads, easy trails then its just ballast to make you fitter

Completely forgot about decathlon, apparently there frames are very nice and well worth upgrading.

Well I've had a look at the Carrera Fury and the Rockrider 8.1 this weekend. Both really nice bikes but the Rockrider was my favourite. I was speaking to the assistant in there and he mentioned that they have upgraded some of the components too, so you get the 2010 versions of the sram gearing and the chainset has been upgraded from the truvativ to a shimano deore. So it's even better value now!
