8 speed mech?
My work bike is a much modified 21 speed 20 year old 531 ST tourer with drop bars that originally had downtube shifters. Last year I acquired a pair of 24 speed (leaving a spare notch on the shifter) Sora levers that worked well to start with. Now its time to change the rear mech, chain and cassette.
I currently have an 11-28 7 speed rear sprocket on a Shimano FH -2200 hub and 28-38-48 front. As 7 speeds are getting harder to source I intend to fit an 8 speed block, chain and mech and would like advice on buying something compatible. Will MTB components work with the Sora shifters (of which there seems more choice) or do I have to go with Road triple gear? Im looking to spend around £50-£60
Any advice would be gratefully received
Regards Mark

You're free to choose any Shimano rear mech as long as it has the capacity to take whatever cassette you choose, which will have to be a Shimano or SRAM item. Chain will have to be 8-speed (KMC or SRAM are popular choices).- - - - - - - - - -

right, first off 8 speed cassettes are wider so you'll need either a new wheel or you'll need to re-dish the wheel and re-space the cones on your existing wheel for it to fit.
Sora STI will work with any road or MTB rear mech, as Des says.
With the front, just stick to a road triple mech and you'll be fine. MTB FDs pull more cable and won't work with the Sora STI properly.Facts are meaningless, you can use facts to prove anything that's remotely true! - Homer0
