Im thinking of taking my bike to Tenerife and I was wondering if anyone has ever had bikes stolen/damaged on a plane? And what do you do about taxi's etc?

Have a look at things like these

And when you call the taxi company, you ask for a big taxi. An estate or something.

I was planning on just putting in a box from a local bike shop and we dont usually call for a taxi, Hundreds of them are already waiting outside. Have you ever done this?

You need to check with your airline about packaging, some will not accept bikes in cardboard boxes anymore.

My Dad does a lot of riding in Spain and Greece, he usually brings a cheaper bike as the baggage handlers are animals and just throw the bike box out the side of the plane, just to warn you...

a third option instead of flimsy cardboard box or mega expensive hard case is ...
    a bike bag ( £40 - 80) with your bike bubble-wrapped inside.
thats my proposed plan for overseas transporting anyway.

I've tried that method, but its a complete bitch if you need to carry it anywhere, cause the soft cases usually don't have wheels.

We've had hundreds of people fly out to us with bikes, with very few real problems. The only guy that had a proper issue had his in a cardboard box that ripped a little and something (this was a few years ago and I can't remember the exact details!) fell out. However, we were able to loan him what he needed to ride. Could be more of an issue if you're somewhere more remote. One other person hads a few problems, but that was due to some bad packing!

Check out our guide to packing your bike: http://www.findyourflow.org/blog/2009/1 ... your-bike/

We always use soft bags with wheels. Ours are the cheap On One one, and have done quite a lot of trips, but are showing wear now! I'd go for a bag if you can as carrying a box is really awkward, plus there's the possibility of it ripping - but that said plenty of people come out to us using them.
  • If you do the packing properly it's fine. I've seen problems but it's been with people cutting corners (not removing calipers = bent frame etc). The best solution I've seen was from a couple of journalists who had these http://www.stacksandstacks.com/bike-box and they were amazing, the bike was built in less than 10 minutes!

My guide is on here, it's similar to Sara's one above but like they say same-same but different!
