Need a bike bag/box

I've been looking at different options for my trip abroad, want a bikeboxalan but I've got mother hubbard syndrome in the NapD slush fund at the moment so can't afford one.
At the moment I'm undecided between the Chain Reaction bag and the Polaris EVA bike pod.
Anyone any experience of either or something else worth looking at for less than 200 quid?

Hey Alex, I've had a CRC bag for about 7 years. Used it for Road and MTB transfers to Spain.
To be sure my pride & joy didn't get damaged, I use a cardboard box (from LBS) inside the bag. While getting the box from LBS ask for the little plastic fork and drop out braces, too.
I never had a problem with weight limits, either (EasyJet), and used to pack all my kit and tools in the box, too, including Track pump. Not helmet though.Start with a budget, finish with a mortgage!0 -
I have the Polaris Bike Pod & it's great - light enough that you don't get hammered by overweight bag charges & stong enough that your bike won't get damaged. I travelled with my bike 3 times last year & once this year & no damage at all.
The only issue is the idea of putting skewers through the case into the wheels, to hold them steady - I've stopped doing it after having baggage handlers bend one of the bolts on the outside of the case . My advice is to either put the wheels in bags (with a bit of padding) or buy a good supply of cheap skewers (which will get bent).
Pity we're not in the same part of the country as you could borrow my bag - I won't be using it for a long while as I managed to fracture my pelvis in 2 places at the beginning of April & I'm still not back at work - not at all funny being stuck on crutches, unable to sit down on normal seats for longer than 30 minutes, let alone a bike saddle, in the beautiful hot weather we seem to be having0 -

Ta, that'll do for me, and it's only 20 quid more than bike box hire (tried and failed to get one, all booked up!)0 -
No you crazy fool! It's 20 quid more to buy than it is to hire a box!
It's 70 quid.0 -

Thanks - it's not great but at least my brand new De Rosa seemed to come off okay (currently at LBS to check for damage) - I took all the impact of the crash!0 -
I've had the CRC bag for 5 years or so - its fine but go OTT in wrapping the bike in pipe lagging etc. If you feel that you could throw the bike down the stairs in the bag - then you're good to fly.0
