Newbie needs help

Hello all,
Firstly I am not only new to the forum, but new to cycling in general. Obviously I had bike when I was younger but just for fun and ust the usual cheapies off the shelf.
I decided some time ago that I was going to take up cycling and decided to do so using a decent bike. I have been lucky enough (I think) to have been offered a Dawes 401 hybrid, although it does need a new crank and cables.
The standard Dawes setup runs a triple 48/38/28 setup which I would like to replace with something of good quality vs good price. I have been told it also needs cables but which ones I'll not know until I colect it tonight.
Can anyone advise of any good deals, or what/where I should be looking for as I have little knowledge thus far.

The best thing to do is take it to a good local bike shop to give it a bit of a shake down, make sure the bike fits you, otherwise it may put you off cycling all together.
Anyway good luck0 -
+1 for starting by making a good relationship with a good local bike shop, don't be afraid to ask some cyclists about wh they'd recommend in your area. The Dawes is a good bike so will give you a lot of pleasure (but like solosurf says, get advice to help you set it up to fit you)0
