One thing after another this year. Lack of fitness continues

Hi all,

I have been looking forward to getting rid of the weight I have put on over our terrible winter with some strong rides and as much commuting as I can do on my bike now the Summer has finally arrived. However for the last four weeks I have had an on and off sore throat, headaches, occasional temperatures etc.

Last couple of weeks I have felt really crook, always tired, and very thick head. With a continous feeling like I have got someting stuck in my throat. I went to see the doctor, he took one look down my throat and said he wasn't happy. Week later had a referal to the ears, nose, throat consultant at the local hospital. He took one look and said I would be booked in for a tonsillectomy.

Imagine how shocked I am now the appointment has come through for my op to be done this coming Tuesday, just four days after seeing the consultant.

I have been reading up about tonsillectomys and apparently at 44 years of age I may be in for a rough ride!! I will be signed off for two weeks to recover. So the long and short of it is that's another two weeks minimum off the bike... Still if it clears up the infection I hopefully will begin to feel my old self again soon.

Anyone else had a tonsillectomy at similar age here? I have found some good tips, such as get an icemaker to drink lots of cold crunchy ice drinks, and to create icepacks to help prevent soft neck/ throat tissue scarring, and setting your alarm in the night for regular painkillers and to wet your whistle to prevent yor throat drying out... I will try and resist eating only icecream otherwise my carbon frame may crack asunder when I get back on later and larger!

Hope the operation goes smoothly. Think positively - you might not want to eat much while you're getting back to normal. You could come out of this leaner...

Thanks mate, I am thinking positive, I need to shake the feeling ill all the time asap and hope the op will fix that, and I have read a seven pound weight drop has been achieved by this rather radical dieting programme (boy they must have been big tonsills! :D)

I should be flying up the hills after dropping that! (just the other couple of stone that needs to follow it too mmmm)

I am sitting in my living room with the patio door open, really nice today, wish it was like this all year round, I do dislike the winters and rain in the UK... I am going to try and get in a short run today... it won't be far as feel real throaty today but should be enough to keep me going for a couple of weeks till I feel better (hopefully)

Had about 6 weeks off the bike with broken femur from CYB forest.

First few turbos were, 1 min on, 1 off for about 5 mins.

Worked up to 10 min etc.

After about a month, doing 30 mins on 5 off, 30 mins on again.

Took about 6 weeks to get back to fullish fitness.

But then a dog attack put paid to all that!

Oh well, back to the drawing board...
