New wheels - Mavic crossmax SLR or other?

I am looking for a new set of wheels to upgrade from my existing XT wheelset. I have always wanted a set of Mavic crossmax SLR's but the price has always put me off.
Before I take the plunge with a deal my LBS has offred me can anyone suggest any alternaives that are as light and strong as SLR's.
I usually ride welsh trail centres and CRC marathons so want something strong enough to thrash on the trails and light enough to be quick in any races/events.
