I've been looking for a first-time road bike for the last few weeks.

I started looking at the £500 entry-level options (Specialized Allez 16 etc), but have more money if needs be and spotted Wiggle's 20% off the Focus Variado:

I can't see anything else near the price that can compete with full 105 gears / brakes, so was wondering what seasoned road experts thought of this as a first foray into road biking.

My work's tax benefit cycle scheme isn't running again 'til September and only runs via Halfords, so an otherwise discounted Boardman is off the menu due to me not wanting to pay full price for one!!

I'll be using it initally for summer commuting and light touring (with a QR-based pannier rack).
