A freind of mine at work has a very old BSO with a 1x5 drivetrain.

They have allowed their chain to rust to the point where one of the links has sized and cannot be loosed with a chain-tool.

I will check it for wear on monday and if its not too far gone I will reccomend they buy a new chain for it. Are 5 sppeed chains the same as 8 speed?

If the chain is too far gone it wont be worth fixing. In that case i will pop the offending link out and rejoin with a power link provided it will fit. Will an 8 speed one fit OK?

5,6,7,and 8 speed chains are all the same basic chain, just different lengths, yes a 7/8 speed link will fit a 5.
