Can you pair shimano shifters (Ultegra) with an SRAM front mech, probably Force? I have read differing opinions, some saying that you can mix the front mechs with different shifters, and others saying you can only mix chains and cassettes. Does anybody have any experience with this, or a definitive answer (if such a thing is possible)?

You can with MTB stuff but I don't think you can with road.

i know from a mountain bike view it works the other way round, shimano front mech with sram shifter, i know it doesnt really help, you could try asking the same question on the mountain bike forum if you dont get any luck here
  • If it helps, it works the other way round. I run Rival shifters with an Ultegra front mech and it's fine.

    YMMV

Ok, thanks. Sounds like it might work, but might be safer sticking with the shimano.

surely it will work fine, if front mech cage will cover the reach to get from one ring to the next then job should be a good un.

you can run truvativ or FSA chainsets with both SRAM and Shimano so I'd bet they will all be fine. you could get a 105 changer ?

it all depends on the cable pull ratio. sram rear mech and shifters are 1:1 direct action and will not work with shimano. i dont think its good to mix brands.
