Principia bikes haven't been in the Uk for some time, but seem to be making a come back (in a small way). I'm thinking of potentially getting a Principia road bike. What do you guys think of them?

  • Well they're good enough for the Irish An Post team lead by Sean Kelly so I would say pretty good!

Good enough to sponsor them anyway

They used to have a good rep for quality alu frames, but did they not go under or something a while back?

what attracts you? geometry? Availability? price?

They're a Danish compnay that went out of business then were resurrected. I wouldn't buy it if you're after a company that will be around for a while.

I'd love one of their Alloy frames for racing but they are mega money...

I have a Principia, frame is outstanding quality. I prefer it to my ex carbon bike because it's a better ride, faster and nearly as light. Under 18lbs, goes like a rocket ship and not harsh at all. Back axle and rest of frame is so stiff. The trouble is, if you get one you will want another.

Alot companys went bust, good and bad, they couldn't compete against cheap frames from Taiwan etc

A Principia frame was one of three (with a Cannondale and a Trek) that didn't fail during strenuous fatigue testing, conducted by the respected German institute EFBe.

I think that counts to their credit, assuming the current incarnation of Principia is broadly the same company, and not just trading on the name.
