OK little update
Started the year at 267lbs on a turbo trainer followed by more and more trips out on my Specialized Sirrus. Did 700 miles in total and my furthest non stop at a decent pace was 20 miles at avg 15.5.
Bought a Specialized Allez(larger frame than the Sirrus) 100 miles ago , went down the SPD-SL route and bang, no more numb feet, less pain in the Ar***se and the same trip two weeks later my avg went to 17.7 and according to my gamin I finished 2.6 miles ahead of the last time I did the route.
Blimey, road bikes and bike fit and the right gear make such a difference
I'm now only 244 lbs and I feel fitter than I have for a long time (I'm nearly 48btw)

  • thanks guys, looking to have a good ride at the weekend as I've been limited by my gears on my new bike. The lever was broke when I bought the bike and has been stuck in the highest three gears.
Getting the new one fitted sat morning so can venture further

Well done steve keep it up mate .... I know Stanway and of course you must know the half decent LBS in Marks Tey.
  • YAY ME.
Just did 50 miles all my own and loved it. Bit sore underneath and the left calf felt a bit tired and the ole back is a bit tender but I feel damn good really.
Not a hilly route, garmin said i gained 1000ft and as I wasn't pushing it 16.2 mph seems alright. Stopped at 30 miles for a coke and crisps and just a couple of mins here and there to soak in the views etc.
    LOVELY
  • PS The mountaineering shop at Stanway is good.(they sell Felt & Genesis) very helpful attitude, very unlike Thomas's Cycles :D .
If I were to buy a new bike though I would go to 53-12

Nice one mate! Try and do 30 mins very light spin later or tomorrow to help your legs recover.

Don't know the mountaineering shop but would definitely recommend 53-12 - they won't try to sell you anything you don't need and don't sneer at you for asking newbie questions.

Have you been along to their (53-12 that is) Wednesday (6pm) or Sunday (10am) rides - nice group of people, and like in Blackhawk Down - no-one gets left behind.

Nice work, sounds very similar to me in terms of most of your stats. I'm now 252lbs down from about 270lbs in the last few months. Averaging similar speeds to you. Just did the Etape Caledonia a couple of weeks ago, first event for me. So I'm getting fitter all the time, and feels great. Still a long way to go, so I imagine I will improve a lot if I keep at it.

One question for you, while I have no problem sourcing Bib Shorts etc, I do struggle with finding a large Cycling Jersey to fit me. Don't want it too tight yet, as its not that flattering. Any tips for sourcing a cycling jersey for those of us a little larger then you very fit types? I've tried many of the local bike shops with no joy, also online shops but they ended up being returned.

    Thanks,

    Dex.
