Cable locks are designed to allow easy theft of parts of your bike:
They can (if correctly fitted) help deter thieves though:
The best option is to not leave a bike outside! Or use something no-one wants to steal! If you have to leave the bike unattended though, then buy the best (most expensive) lock you can afford, supplement it with a decent (expensive!) cable, make sure you secure it correctly and hope for the best :?0 -
Read the LCC campaign info on this subject:

it pretty much sums up what you should do :-)0 -
If you have or plan to get cycle insurance it is also worth checking what is on their credited bike locks list. At least then if you do fall victim to someone determined enough to break your lock, your insurance will still cover you.
I have one of these for my commuter bike. It's solid and weather proof and I'd happily reccommend the range. Also adding one of these to secure the whole bike.
Hope that helps.0 -

hi there, where can i get bike insurance ? and how much does it cost ?
also, can you please send the first link again
thanks0 -
first link here. didn't realise they had a silly site that wouldn't link the actual product...
As for bike insurance, there are lots of companies that do it. Depending on how much your bike is worth and how you use it, it could be covered under your home contents insurance. But for anything in the region of £1000 plus or custom builds you will probably need a more specialised company.
here's a thread on insurance that has info on some good companies.0 -

Lockwise, get a U-lock not a cable lock, there's only a couple of cables on the market that offer any protection at all, most can be cut effortlessly with cable cutters, many can be cut easily with pliars, some can be cut easily with kitchen scissors. Ulocks are far more effective, and just as portable. A cable can be a useful accessory on top of a u-lock, but that's all they're good for.
Mahoosive chain is the best option, as long as you choose the right one, but they're pretty impractical.
Or invest in what I have, a Dangerously Loose Garage Door. Anyone who tries to break into my garage is going to regret it when the front door unexpectedly falls on them, then gives them tetanus from its rusty sharp edges.Uncompromising extremist0
