I'm moving to Lisbon at the beginning of July and am considering a change of career (web developer, in fact I helped build this very site) and am looking at seeing the city as much as possible and thought that perhaps cycle couriering might be a good way of doing so, keeping fit and not sitting behind my laptop all the time.
Can anyone give me some advice on being a cycle courier and hopefully of doing so in Lisbon?

Aren't Portuguese roads supposedly the most lethal in (Western, perhaps) Europe?

Like many on this forum, I am always looking for bikes and cyclists. When I visited Lisbon in May last year, bikes were conspicuous by their near absence. Maybe 1-2 guys on MTBs. I agree that Portuguese roads have the reputation of bring dangerous.

I like a challenge. Mind you, I don't like the idea of being hospitalised as soon as I arrive. Maybe I'll play it by ear when I get there.
Thanks for the headsup on the potential danger guys.
  • Am portuguese by parental descent, and have been to Lisbon loads. Not only are Portuguese drivers terrible (stats I've seen in the past put them among the worst in W Europe), but Lisbon is really hilly, particularly in the centre. Some of the hills are quite steep to walk up, mind you cycle.

If you decide to do it, you better be pretty damn fit...
