im on the verge of buying one of these, wanted the 705 but is it really worth the extra money??

anyway, just been reading reviews of the 500 and there seems to be concerns over the mount and its stability. does anyone have one? have you suffered any problems with this?

also if anyone can explain if the 705 really is worth forking out the extra money id be very grateful (i want to order 1 but want to get thr right 1)

thanks for your help :D

I read a report that the mount moved when pushing the buttons, I would advise who ever wrote the report to actually put the mount on tighter.

Mine is perfectly fine on either of my bikes, and takes a little bit of force to actual move the mount. You get 2 different sized rubber rings to fit the mount, just choose the rings that keep the mount nice and tight. Once in the mount you shouldn't have any issues with stability.

Do you want maps, if not just get the 500, if you really want maps then the 305 or the 705 are your options.

I have one and use it on three bikes each with their own mount and have had no problems - it seems secure enough mounted on the bars or on the stem. The mount comes with a pre-shaped pad that fits between the mount and the bars/stem and various sizes of securing bands, just be careful and pick the right size securing bands.

Go buy one it's a great piece of kit in my opinion.

The twist mount of the 500 is probably the most secure mount Garmin have come up with yet. If you're worried about using the rubber rings you can get a mount for a Forerunner 310xt that has exactly the same mechanism, but attaches with cable ties.
    More problems but still living....

I 've got the Edge 500 and I think it is the bee's - I have got additional mounts and cadence sensors on my spare bike and turbo bike and it all works faultlessly. This device has really brought a new dimension to my training...excellent

I use the Edge 500 on both my roadie & MTB. I was a bit concerned about losing it when on the MTB but it is extremely stable. Great piece of kit.

Another question on the 500 - can you upload a .gpx file to the device so that it will navigate you on a pre-set route despite the absence of mapping? i.e, record a route on bikely, google, whatever, upload route and bingo away you go?

Or is that not how these things work?

    Thanks for any help.

Yes if you can follow a "breadcrumb trail" it does'nt give turn by turn directions however. The mount is fine but be carefull how you press the bottom left button as you could accidentally unlock the unit from the mount.

How can you do this, you have to turn it 90 degrees to unlock it from the mount.

Ok, first off I love Garmin products and I think the 500 is the bee knees. I've been keeping an eye on forums to see if/when people have problems with the mount and have not found anything yet but...

My 500 detached itself from the mount when I was going over some road which was about to be re-surfaced.

The 500 has two little flaps which keep it attached (similar to a shoe cleat) on mine those had worn down and they eventually snapped (a bit like a shoe cleat can)

Now I wouldn't consider myself a heavy user in that I normally use smooth roads and no mtb'ing, I do however take the 500 off and download every night.

Garmin to their credit sent me a replacement, a big thanks there.

What I'm going to do now and would advise others to do is keep an eye on the mount and look for any wear on the 500 unit itself. When I race I'll probably use some clear tape to make sure nothing happens.
