Watched my first ever stage of the ToC yesterday and was surprised that it was actually quite a decent race. Maybe the best thing for it would be to act as another pre tour 1 week race option though. Certainly better to watch than some of the other "up and coming" stage races.

When were the TDF, GDI and VDE considered "Grand Tours" ie when was the term first used?

Surely a race needs a certain degree of history before it can be considered 'grand' ?

Calling it "The Fourth Grand Tour" is a little premature really, especially as there are longer stage races around, that take more to win than this one. OK so the calibre of riders is higher but good riders a race does not make.

Surely the Grand Tours are also 3 weeks long?

Paris Nice puts the jaunt around California under the bus on every level and would never be called 'Grand'. These US guys have a lot to learn if they think their race even comes close to rivalling a GT.

I'm reffering to page 62 of May's Procycling, which asks the question "Is this year's move to May enough to transform the TOC into the USA's grand tour?"

So you have been taking an interest in it - if you are able to compare the two...

Obviously not when it's run at the same time as the Giro.

I'd have thought it was - the biggest race in the US.

It's certainly not a Grand Tour though - it would need to last three weeks though.

They certainly have the terrain to make it a top one-week stage race though.

    +1

To become a GT it needs to add 2 weeks and find a slot in the calendar (unlikely as even the Vuelta is squeezed into a late slot when very few non-Spanish teams can even be bothered). It then needs a bit of history and legend and it may make it as the new grand tour

Dave I think you need to grow up and stop repeating yourself especially where what you are saying isn't constructive.

I think you need to think before you post snooty remarks about not being interested in a race, then going on to comment on it several times. But hey, that's just me.

He has the best cycling photos by a long way but I find it pretty difficult to get a hold of any and even contacting them there are too many restrictions.
