Changing Cassette

At the moment I have 8 speed cassette could I change it to maybe a 9 or 10speed. would the levers be able to cope or does it all have to be changed.

Or would it be possible to change the wheel with a new 10 speed cassette on it. bit lost here out of my depth.

    Shifters have to match the cassette.
    I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.
