I have Tektro V-brakes so... er... 4 fingers.

    Nah, first two.

I don't fancy buying all the clobber to get disc brakes.

I've not got comfy with 1 finger at the moment. I think it's partly because I can't get the brake levers far enough in on the bars with my shifters. It works, when they die I'll try something different!

I think next time I'm beginning to get arm pump I may try switching to the middle finger. Might give the muscles a rest.

Because the muscles that operate your fingers are in your arm, not in your hand or fingers. So it makes sense.

Now where are the pinky finger braking freaks..

I use 2 fingers because I dont like the levers close into the grips. Index finger braking makes my right arm pump up.

Doesnt matter how many fingers you use as long as people would just lay off dragging the back brake. Jeez all you can hear at trail centres is back wheels locking up making big brake bumps, ploughing furrows and tearing the trail to bits.

Do you mean far away from the grips?

If you one finger braked, you could move the levers even further from the grips.

    1 finger here..

Remove the optics from the shifters and put them outside of the brake levers. Makes it a lot easier to use the shifters as they are not 2 metres away lol...

  • I was wondering. Perhaps there's a correlation between your longest finger and your braking finger?

My middle finger is far longer than my index finger and I brake with my middle finger.

Many people have a longer index finger...

Love to, mine don't have the option (old lx). CBA with the effort of trying to bodge it.

Been using two finger braking since I had shimano DX V brakes oooh, years ago.
(when I had Diatech mechanical disks, I used 4 finger braking, and still couldn;t slow down  )
I would happily use one finger braking, but just can't get my shifters and levers in a position that's comfortable to do it.

But Realman, why don;t you go off and join singletrackworld instead?

They don't need fingers to shift gears. Also, one of those levers is the clutch innit ?

That sentence counteracts itself - if one finger is on the clutch, then yes, you need that finger to change gears
but yes, you're quite right, the left hand lever is the clutch, and they change gears with their foot.

I use 2 on MTB's on both front and rear brakes.

    I use 4 on motorbikes.

    Personal preference for me.

a guy at work has just fitted an autoclutch to his KTM mx bike, and he know has two brake levers on the bars and no foot brake, so its like an MTB, freakin awesome it is to 8)

Oh wow, autoclutch on an MX bike would certainly make life easier! I've always struggled at MX because it just feels so similar to mountain biking that I can't get my head into "motorcycle" mode :D

I have no idea how many fingers or which ones I use. I know I use some, probably 2 but then again I know i am either braking or not.

thought. If your using 1 finger and your arms start to tire surely that must give a lack of control. Once your arm is pumped you lose dexterity, which isnt ideal tearing down a rocky mountain.

    1 finger on my bikes.

Interestingly my mate has a gixxer stuntbike that has clutch and a secondary rear brake lever on the bars for doing wheelies when in positions where you can't reach the foot brake... He did, somewhat stupidly put the rear brake lever in the place of a standard clutch lever, that messed his head up, until i pointed out that perhaps the other way would be better considering how the clutch is kinda useful and all that whereas the rear brake is only occasionally needed!

To be honest Arm pump i have experienced only when my bike was set up badly.

need to get you levels at the right angle and biting at about the right point then its ot effort for miles!

Hope V2s are the only brake I have been able to use 1 finger [Index] braking on. Every other brake it's been 2 finger braking.
