Shimano deore rapidfire shifters

Can I use a pair of 9 speed Shimano Deore rapidfire shifters as an upgrade replacement for damaged Shimano Alivio shifters with a 7 speed cassette on my lads bike? OR would I either have to put a 9 speed cassette on the wheel OR get a pair of 7 speed shifters !

The shifters must match the cassette.
If you have a 7 speed hub you cannot fit a nine speed cassette unless it is an 8/9 [they are the same] with a spacer. You remove the spacer.
Your best bet is to get some 7 speed shifters.0
