What Helmet?

So I'm just getting back in to some more serious riding, trails and easy going downhill.

I think my commuter helmet isn't really up to the job of the faster tracks I'm doing and I know it would give me a much needed confidence boost if I was to get a full face. (When I used to ride a lot in my more tyouthful days I had a giro madmax - not even sure they do them anymore!?)

Does anyone have any suggestions or advice on what to get or just as importantly what not to get?

Price wise, the cheaper the better really but if I can get something solid and trusted for around £50, that would be spot on.

Cheers

just found this full face on chainreaction

that is definitely in the price range, reduced from £100 which is a bonus and looks nice too.

    any thoughts on that?

The Evo is a great helmet, I use it but as always, try different helmets on.

The best helmet is the one that fits YOU the best

thanks peter - It's always good to get some feedback and thoughts as there are so many helmets out there!

With my price range I guess I'm more interested in hearing about helmets that people would suggest I avoid. I'm sure there are plenty of bad helmets under £100.

I'm definitely liking the look of the 661 Evo - there wasn't a 661 back in my day so will definitely go find some to try on.

There aren't really any BAD helmets per se, because the fit is so personal, some just really don't fit some people!

thanks ride - I may have a problem then as my head resembles that of Joseph Merrick's...

So I aapreciate that I can be the only person to tell me if a helmet fits right or not. So other than fit, is there anything that makes a helmet good? For example, a £300 helmet has to be better than a £50 one for certain reasons. Are these reasons literally down to materials and how light they are?

Yep, they all pass the same safety standards. So th emore expensive ones are probably just lighter and with better ventilation.

They sometimes pass better safety tests but most of the time it is because of the materials for weight and ventilation

    In short, yes.

The more expensive helmets will be lighter, stronger and possibly better ventilated. They will also have the best paint jobs :D

When I say stronger, that's not to say that the cheaper ones are rubbish. They will (mostly) all exceed the relevant safety standards, the more expensive ones may exceed those standards by a greater degree than the cheaper ones though. If that makes sense.

    As above.

Don't get too hung up on weight because if the helmet is comfortable a few grams is not noticeable. As with most of these things your lbs is the best place to start. Make a nuisance of yourself and try loads on.

thanks everyone for your input. It's as I expected really so it's nice to know I've not lost it too much just yet!

If you're bored and want to stick a link to your fave helmet for under £100 here, that would also be appreciated.

I hope the 661 evo is a good fit now as that's been my fave looking so far :D

time to make a nuisance then!

I've just ordered a Giro Remedy Composite Helmet, with the Zombie graphics. £90
I love it for no reason other than it looks ace!

Was recommended to me on these forums.

You can also get the white and green version for about £85
