So I stacked it last weekend and have bent my rear mech and it seems also my hanger, I'm reasonably OK with the mechanics but can't seem to sort this so I will take to my LBS who are very good, trouble is I can't get in there that soon and want to ride tomorrow and on Saturday.

I was thinking about running single speed as a temporary measure, I have single speed coversion kit and do quite like riding with just one gear.

I have a Cove Stiffee FR and plan on running 36T up front and 16T (would prefer 14T) at back which should suit as I'm riding mini DH (mainly big berms with a few rock gardens and one drop) tomorrow and then 4X and DS on the weekend.

Will I need any extra bits? I'd like to keep costs down if possible. I already have a spare chain that I can shorten but I understand that I may struggle with the length of chain and it's tension with vertical dropouts. I'm not sure if I can run a tensionaer with a bent hanger.

If I manage to get things going will I have trouble with my chain falling off alot even if I get chainline set correctly?

What a nightmare, the suns finally out and I will be gutted if I can't ride!

Any one have any experiance? Any help appreciated.

Thanks

James

a half link chain maybe. Or just a half link.

Or straighten the hanger and use a tensioner.

you'll be able to do it fine with a bent hanger, but you can probably straighten your mech enough with spanners and get a new hanger overnight from betd.
  • so I've stripped down and set up as single speed and seem to have good tension without using a tensioner, in fact I can't quite believe it's gone so well that I'm sure something must be wrong, suppose I'll see when I hit the trail.

Anybody know how high the chances of the chain snapping are if the tension is too tight?

High, and it will happen at the furthest point on the trail

  • I didn't make it out last night in the end but plan to go tonight, I took it for a spin round the park and all seemed OK but you never really know until you hit the trail I suppose which I will do on the weekend.

I am getting a serious creaking noise from the bottom bracket area, I'm guessing that this is the chain as I know it's not the cranks, although it could be the spoke I suppose.

Anyone had any experiance with a chain making such noises? could it be that it's too tight?

What chain and mech you using? mine makes a fair bit of noise but im using aluminium jockey wheels

ive been running my dh bike with a bent hanger for ages, bent the mech the other way to compensate for the hanger and its been working well enough, gears slip every now and then though
