Getting my handlebars straight

So, any good scientific ways of doing this, i.e. getting your handlebars exactly 90 degrees to the front wheel?

I generally line up with the eye, but it always looks wrong after I mount the bike and have to adjust it so it feels right, then I check the line again and it looks out of kilter, even though it feels right.

  • I got a good tip for this one from an experienced rider.

Supposedly its generally easier for you to judge if two edges are parallel than at 90 degrees, so put a straight edge (ruler or long spirit level or similar) across the front forks. Tape or get someone to hold the straight edge in position than look down on the bars and adjust bars until parallel with the straight edge.

Turn the bars/wheel so they're backwards pointing to the rear of the bike, now you can eye though the stem/top tube/down tube/wheel. Line them all up & then turn the bars/wheel back the correct way.
