Polaris Bike Pod in a Car Boot

Does anyone have any experience of getting these into a car boot? Going by the stated dimensions its going to be really touch and go whether it fits, but from what I have read, the box has a little give in it.
I've got a Golf Mk 4 estate + 2 kids so no chance of putting the rear seats down.
Has anyone managed a similar feat? Failing that, are there any roof boxes that would fit a folded up bike? I don't want to use external racks for security reasons.
